Automated cancer diagnosis by automatic image feature extraction procedures can be used as a feature extraction in the field of fractal dimension. The aim of this survey was to introduce a quantitative and objective mathematical method for pinpointing the differences between malignant and non –malignant epithelial cells in urine cytology by the use of software analysis. Materials & Methods:  Forty-one positive urine cytology and 33 negative subjects from Pathology Department of Imam Khomeini Hospital, Urmia, Iran (2003-2007) were selected at random. Digitalized images were prepared by the use of objective 100X (a digital video head) which subsequently were processed by the BeonitTM software version 1.3 (Tru Soft International inc. USA) to measure fractal dimension of nuclear boundaries. Results:  Findings revealed statistically significant differences between fractal dimensions of nuclear boundaries of cancerous and non-cancerous smears (P=0.001). Study had selected a cut-off point to (1.732 ± 0.006) to discriminate malignant and non-malignant epithelial cells in urinary smears. Conclusion: Based on diagnostic accuracy measures (sensitivity and specificity), probability of disease measures (predictive value of a positive and negative test results), and likelihood ratio of positive and negative tests, it seems fractal dimension of nuclear cell boundaries for urinary smears can be used as a feature extraction in the field of automated cancer diagnosis.  }, keywords = {Automated Cancer Diagnosis,Screening Machine Design, fractal dimension}, url = {https://ijp.iranpath.org/article_8547.html}, eprint = {https://ijp.iranpath.org/article_8547_68490472b00a147e7d910f7c4258dc47.pdf} } @article { author = {Shafiei, Reza and Riazi, Zahra and Sarvghad, Mohamdreza and Galian Sharifdini, Mysam and Mahmoodzadeh, Abbas and Hajia, Massoud}, title = {Prevalence of IgG and IgM Anti-Toxoplasma gondii Antibodies in HIV Positive Patients in Northeast of Iran}, journal = {Iranian Journal of Pathology}, volume = {6}, number = {2}, pages = {68-72}, year = {2011}, publisher = {Farname Inc in collaboration with Iranian Society of Pathology}, issn = {1735-5303}, eissn = {2345-3656}, doi = {}, abstract = {  Background and Objectives: Toxoplasmosis has become one of the more frequent opportunistic infections and the most common cause of focal brain lesions complicating the course of AIDS. However, there is a little information about the frequency of the toxoplasmosis in various regions of Iran. At the present study, we evaluated the prevalence of toxoplasmosis in patients with AIDS in Mashhasd (Northeast Iran). Material and Methods: Overall, 258 suspected patients with CD4+ T-cell count and clinical manifestation for HIV infection were referred from Infectious Disease Center to Imam Reza Hospital in 2009. These patients were examined by ELISA, western blot method and tested by P24 antigen. HIV positive patients (n=121) were entered in this cross-sectional study and investigated for IgG and IgM anti- Toxoplasma antibodies with ELISA. Results: The mean age of the patients was 35.83 + 6.75 yr. 83.5% of the patients were intravenous drug misuse. The IgG anti-Toxoplasma antibodies were positive in 46 (38.01%) patients, while IgM antibody was detected in 3 cases (2.5%). This study attempted to determine the rate of HHU-8 infection in KS in an Iraniann cross sectional study. Method & material: In this cross-sectional study, we used paraffin-embedded specimens of 54 clinically well-characterized kaposi sarcoma cases. Routine streptavidin- biotin- peroxidase immunostaining with diaminobenzidine was performed on paraffin-embedded tissue of 54 KS cases using a monoclonal antibody directed against the c-terminum of the latent nuclear antigen-1 molecule of HHV-8 (colone 13B10; Novocastra) at 1:50 dilution. Result: Positive HHV8 nuclear staining was detected in the nuclei of the spindle cells and endothelial cells of the vascular channels in about 88.9%. (48/54) of all cases and in 90.56% (48/53) of cases with presence of residual tumor in specimen (1 of 54 paraffin blockes has no residual tumor). HHV8 was detected in higher percentage in plaque and nodule stage rather than patch stage with p=0.035. HHV 2 was detected in lesser percentage in lesion of hand and trunk rather than other sites with p=0.042. There was no significant difference in HHV8 positivity between the presence of HHV8 and age, gender and history of immunosuppression. Conclusion: Immunohistochemical detection of LANA HHV-8 is helpful in diagnosis of suspicious cases of KS, specially in lesion of plaque and nodule stage that are not located only in hand or trunk.  }, keywords = {Human Herpes virus 8,LNA-1 Antigen,Kaposi Sarcoma}, url = {https://ijp.iranpath.org/article_8551.html}, eprint = {https://ijp.iranpath.org/article_8551_e8177cf7d027408fceac59b03e1797a5.pdf} } @article { author = {Nateghian, Alireza and Irajian, Gholamreza and Faraji, Fatemeh}, title = {Community Versus Nosocomial Staphylococcus aureus Septicemia in Children Admitted to Aliasghar Children Hospital, Tehran, Iran}, journal = {Iranian Journal of Pathology}, volume = {6}, number = {2}, pages = {79-85}, year = {2011}, publisher = {Farname Inc in collaboration with Iranian Society of Pathology}, issn = {1735-5303}, eissn = {2345-3656}, doi = {}, abstract = {  Background and Objectives: The aim of the study was to determine the role and characteristics of nosocomial and community acquired Staphylococcus sepsis in admitted children in tertiary centers in Iran. Ultrasonography reported a heterogeneous multicystic mass measuring 155×97 mm in hypo gastric area. The CT-scan with IV contrast reported a huge cystic lesion, containing multiple septi that could be due to ovarian lesion. After surgery, histopathological examination showed typical laminated &germinative layers with hexagonal scolecies of hydatid cyst.
