Early recognition and diagnosis of neonatal sepsis remains a challenge because of the variable and nonspecific clinical presentation. The laboratory criteria are often non specific and not fully reliable. The objective of this review is to highlight the various hematological and biological markers of neonatal sepsis. We searched PubMed and Elsevier’s web of science from studies evaluating the hematological and biological markers of neonatal sepsis. The key words used were “neonatal sepsis”, “hematological marker” and ”biomarker”. Since a battery of markers of neonatal sepsis are available, it is always better to rely on a combination of markers along with the clinical correlation.  }, keywords = {neonate,Septicemia,Biological Marker}, url = {https://ijp.iranpath.org/article_8260.html}, eprint = {https://ijp.iranpath.org/article_8260_bc8f6692f47ee079590061bf8f02f9cd.pdf} } @article { author = {Abdollahi, Alireza and Sheikhbahaei, Sara and Safinejad, Somaye and Jahanzad, Issa}, title = {Correlation of ER, PR, HER- 2 and P53 Immunoreactions with Clinico-Pathological Features in Breast Cancer}, journal = {Iranian Journal of Pathology}, volume = {8}, number = {3}, pages = {147-152}, year = {2013}, publisher = {Farname Inc in collaboration with Iranian Society of Pathology}, issn = {1735-5303}, eissn = {2345-3656}, doi = {}, abstract = {  Background and Objectives: The most prevalent malignancy among women is known to be breast cancer (BC). Several factors contribute to determining tumor prognosis and treatment strategies. In this study, the frequency and relevance of these factors are discussed. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out on 214 patients with BC, who referred to the Cancer Institute of Imam Hospital complex, Tehran, Iran in 2010 and 2011. The data about biomarkers (ER, PR, P53, HER-2) status and clinic pathologic features were extracted from patients files. Results: Invasive ductal carcinoma (90.7%) was the most common pathology of BC. The frequency of estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), P53 and HER2 was estimated as 63.6%, 58.9%, 37.4% and 21.9% respectively. None of these markers had significant relationship with age, tumor size, tumor pathology, vascular invasion, calcification, nipple invasion, benign component, skin invasion and mitosis. Between low grade histology of tumor and ER, PR significant positive relationship was found (P=0.001). Lymph node involvement was positively associated with P53 expression. A positive relationship found between ER and PR (P=0.001). Both P53 and HER-2 inversely correlate with ER, PR (P=0.001). HER2 and P53 had no significant relationship. Conclusion: We found a significantly higher PR(+), ER(+) expression in low grade tumors. Although P53 and HER2 expressions were not found to be correlated with tumor grade, P53 expression was associated with poorer prognosis due to higher lymph node involvement and perineural invasion.  }, keywords = {}, url = {https://ijp.iranpath.org/article_8261.html}, eprint = {https://ijp.iranpath.org/article_8261_4956b643a39a4c0c88e4dc54ae0d2a8e.pdf} } @article { author = {Hussain Mir, Sajad and Maqbool Darzi, Mohammad and Saleem Mir, Masood}, title = {Efficacy of Abroma augusta on Biochemical and Histomorphological Features of Alloxan-Induced Diabetic Rabbits}, journal = {Iranian Journal of Pathology}, volume = {8}, number = {3}, pages = {153-158}, year = {2013}, publisher = {Farname Inc in collaboration with Iranian Society of Pathology}, issn = {1735-5303}, eissn = {2345-3656}, doi = {}, abstract = {Background and Objectives: Medicinal plants are well documented for possessing antidiabetic or antihyperglycaemic potential. Materials and Methods: An experiment was conducted to study the effect of aqueous extract of the leaves of A. augusta on biochemical values and histomorphological features of pancreas and kidneys of alloxan-induced (@ 80 mg/kg. body weight intraperitoneally) diabetic rabbits. The animals were divided into three groups viz, normal control, diabetic control and A. augusta treated diabetic rabbits. The extract was given by gavages at a dose of 2ml/kg body weight twice daily for a period of 21 days. Result: Normal blood sugar (P<0.01), blood urea (P<0.01) and serum creatinine (P<0.02) levels were observed. Histological examination of the pancreas showed an increase in the number of beta cells in the A. augusta treated diabetic rabbits. Further, the extract was found to ameliorate the histological abnormalities of the kidneys in diabetic rabbits. Conclusion: This experimental study indicates that A. augusta extract possess either antioxidant effect or regenerative ability in ameliorating the biochemical and histomorphological abnormalities in diabetic rabbits.  }, keywords = {}, url = {https://ijp.iranpath.org/article_8262.html}, eprint = {https://ijp.iranpath.org/article_8262_652dd98e7878378109d47b85ae063c9d.pdf} } @article { author = {Siadati, Sepideh and Khorram, Nasibeh and Mirzapour, Mohaddeseh}, title = {Oral and Jaw Lesions in Adults: A 19-Year Retrospective Study In Northern Iran}, journal = {Iranian Journal of Pathology}, volume = {8}, number = {3}, pages = {159-164}, year = {2013}, publisher = {Farname Inc in collaboration with Iranian Society of Pathology}, issn = {1735-5303}, eissn = {2345-3656}, doi = {}, abstract = {  Background and Objectives: There are a few studies on histopathologic type of oral lesions especially from Iran. The data were collected from the archive of pathology and analyzed based on age, gender, site of lesion and histopathologic type. Results: From the 465 studied specimens, the mean age was 34.6 ± 20.3 years old; female to male ratio was 1.1: 1. The most frequent lesions were inflammatory/reactive (60%), tumoral (25%), cystic (14.2%), and tumor like lesions (0.8%), respectively. The most common inflammatory lesion was mucocele as 54 cases (19.4%). Ameloblastoma was the most common odontogenic tumor (55.5%). The most common odontogenic cyst was radicular cyst (44.8%), and the most common non-odontogenic cyst was mucus retention cyst (75%). Materials and Methods: A cross sectional research was performed. The study population consisted of all articles published in the years studied. Totally 288 printed articles in terms of number and sexes of authors were recognized and collaborative coefficient between the authors was calculated. The data were collected by referring to the original articles and Excel software was used for data entry. Data analysis with using descriptive statistics and collaborative coefficient formula was worked out. Results: Altogether 288 articles had 1078 authors. Average number of authors was 3.75 ± 1.65 and the maximum number of articles was written by three authors. Collaborative coefficient in 2008 was seen as higher ratio of collaboration between article authors. Average collaborative coefficient of authors in research years was 0.69 which demonstrated willingness to cooperate between authors of this journal. We describe a case of a 60 yr old female with large right breast mass of 10 years duration with no nodal involvement. These molecular and clinical manifestations result from an impaired step in the inflammatory process, namely, the emigration of leukocytes from the blood vessels to sites of infection, which requires adhesion of leukocytes to the endothelium. Over last 20 years, three distinctive defects in the leukocyte adhesion cascade, involving several precise ordered steps such as rolling, integrin activation and firm adhesion of the leukocytes have been described. While LAD I and II are clearly autosomal recessive disorders, the mode of inheritance of LAD III is still not clear. LAD I is due to structural defects in the integrin molecule, preventing firm adhesion to occur.
